It was a quiet morning. I was finishing up breakfast by myself. In the quietness I asked myself, what would it take for me to serve more people? Then I went back into the stillness to allow the answer to come to me.
Suddenly it came, not from my mind but from deep within my heart, not as one sentence but as a realization that feels like a sacred spring flowing out of my heart.
I realized that the number of people that I serve is equivalent to how much love I have for my self. True love for myself comes from the center of my heart. So the number of people that I serve is equivalent to how much love I have and feel in my heart.
If the love I have for my self is equivalent to the love I have for one person I might be able to serve one person. If the love I have for my self is equivalent to the love I have for ten people then I can serve ten people well. If the love I have for my self is equivalent to the love I have for one thousand people then I can serve one thousand people well with ease.
If the love I have for my self is equivalent to the love I have for millions of people in this country then I can serve all the millions of people in this country well with ease and joy. I felt my heart expanding more and more as I felt the increased love in my heart. Instantly I realized that I could serve all the people in this country because I have the capacity to serve, and my capacity to serve is the love in my heart.
If the love I have for my self is equivalent to all the 7 billion people in the world then I can serve, with my capacity of love all the 7 billion people in the world. If the love I have for my self is equivalent to the love I have for all the beings, all the mineral beings, all the plant beings, all the animal beings and all the human beings on the entire Earth Planet, then I have the capacity to serve all the beings on the entire Earth Planet. If the love I have for my self goes beyond the Earth Planet then my capacity to serve goes beyond the Earth Planet.
New realizations kept coming to me as I felt the sacred spring continued to flow out of my heart. I realized that there indeed is a sacred spring in my heart and it is the sacred source of infinite love. How much love flows out of my heart depends on how much love has been realized in this sacred spring. My love, my capacity to serve expands when my self-realization expands.
If I perceive myself as an individual who is separate from everything else then I can’t even serve myself well. Such fragmented self-perception doesn’t reflect the truth of my being and it cannot serve me well. I perceive myself as a complete divine being that has the infinite source of love in my heart. I recognize the divine wholeness in me. I love my self as much as I love the whole, and my capacity to serve expands to serve the whole.
I took a deep refreshing breath, feeling this source of sacred flow of love in my heart. All I could feel is I Am. I Am. I Am All That Is. The sacred source of love and all creation is right here in my heart and constantly flows out of my heart. It is from this sacred spring of infinite love that I serve. When I flow from this sacred spring I am automatic in service of love, and my capacity to serve becomes infinite.
I am in service of love without the notion of serving because love is who I am. Whether I am with the little grass that grows everywhere, a single wild flower that blooms by the side of the road, a naughty squirrel that runs across the street, a child that is smiling or crying, people whom I know well or just passing by. I serve them all equally by flowing from my sacred fountain of love and by recognizing the same sacred spring of love in their hearts.
Tears welled up in my eyes with these profound realizations. I realized that it is not about the number of people that I serve, it is about what I serve with. The question that I asked earlier dropped away. With the realization that the love in my heart is infinite I know my capacity to serve has no limit. The infinite source of all creation is within me and everything flows out of me from that source is infinite.
